Match Report
Willand snatch late equaliser in 1-1 draw!
As has happened in the last few games, Willand again were slow out of the blocks and conceded an early goal in the fourth minute. A mis-communication between George Burton & Ryan Guppy lead to a harmless ball into the Rovers penalty area being headed weakly away where it was pounced on by the visitor’s Wayne Nderemani who fired into the net past a stranded Burton.
Not the start we were hoping for!
Willand, welcoming Jack Rice & Josh Searle back from injury, struggled to find any fluency in their play with the midfield time again being over-run by Mangotsfield. The first half was fought out in a very scrappy manner with neither side threatening to score. Ht 0-1.
The second half was equally as scrappy with the Mangos successfully stifling any expansive play Willand tried to introduce to the proceedings and slowing the game at every opportunity: the home side was just not able to get out of first gear. It was only in the last twenty minutes when Willand managed to put some pressure on the visitor’s goal, but even then very few clear cut chances were created.
The pressure did eventually pay off in stoppage time: Willand won a corner on the right which was floated into the box, Cameron Pike in the Mangotsfield goal came out to punch the ball clear but clattered into the back of one of his own defenders just before he made contact with the ball. This resulted in the unlucky Pike punching the ball into his own net. 1-1.
Straight from the restart Willand regained possession and played the ball forward seeking an unlikely winner. The ball came out to Alfie Moulden on the right of the Mangos penalty area, but with only the keeper to beat he blazed his shot over the bar. A glorious opportunity to take all three points gone!
Ft 1-1.
Make no mistake, this was a disappointingly poor performance by Willand and not pretty to watch. Significant improvement will have to be seen next Saturday at Wantage if we want to progress in the FA Trophy.
