WHAT HAPPENED

Our perfect start to 2021/22 continued on Sunday as we climbed to the top of the Barclays FA Women’s Super League table with a 5-0 victory over Manchester City.

Jonas Eidevall’s side have now won each of their opening seven fixtures across all competitions this term, scoring no fewer than three goals in each game.

Manchester City dominated possession throughout at Meadow Park, but with our perfectly-executed gameplan to counter in numbers and play direct, we created chance after chance and could have scored more on the night.

Our first of the evening, however, was a gift from the visitors. Alanna Kennedy underhit a backpass to Karima Benameur and Beth Mead was first to react, regaining possession before teeing up Vivianne Miedema for a simple finish.

That opener arrived against the run of play, but our second was certainly deserved following a fine attacking move. Miedema played a flicked pass into the path of Kim Little and our captain jinked and dummied her way past two defenders, before shifting the ball onto her right foot and firing into the top corner.

Our dominance continued into the second half too, as Katie McCabe furthered our advantage on the hour mark, latching onto a long ball and firing a powerful effort into the roof of the net for her first of the season.

But we weren’t done there. Little controlled the midfield from start to finish, dictating the pace and tempo with her silky dribbling and close control, and after winning a penalty with some intelligent positioning, stepped up to double her tally on the night.

It was an outstanding performance and with less than two minutes remaining of injury time, Leah Williamson capped off her incredible week with a bullet header into the bottom corner, just days after captaining the Lionesses.
