Match Report

Willand win in FA Trophy at Wantage.

A much changed team, due to injuries and unavailabilities, saw Rovers win 2-1 in Oxfordshire, with Weston super Mare returning loanees Ben Griffith and Bailey Kempster bolstering the squad.

Rovers started brightly, making good headway down both wings and sending in dangerous crosses on a number of occasions during the early exchanges. It was one of these raids down the left wing on 16 minutes that lead to the opening goal. Mani Skett skilfully beat two defenders and bursting into the Wantage penalty before squaring to Ben Griffith who blasted the ball first time into the net. 0-1

Just 9 minutes later it was almost a repeat performance. After some good work again by Skett, the ball was played down the left wing to Bailey Kempster who drove in a cross. He picked out Griffith who again blasted the ball in. 0-2

The rest of the first half continued in the same vein, Willand with the majority of possession but not creating any further clear cut chances & Wantage relying on counter attacks.

Ht 0-2.

The second half started with Wantage showing much more purpose and on 47 minutes they pulled one back after a mix up in the Willand defence. 1-2

Wantage had changed their shape & were getting much more possession now and creating chances of their own. The Willand defence held strong with only the occasional shot having to be fielded by Burton.

On 63 minutes Rovers had another rampaging raid down the right wing. Noah Coppin squaring for Ben Griffith to smash home. Unbelievably the referee’s assistant flagged for offside but it was clear to all that Griffith was well on side when Coppin made the cross! Poor decision! Score remained 1-2.

Willand closed out the half with more pressure on the Wantage goal. The most notable effort being a powerful shot from Coppin on 79 minutes that the home keeper superbly tipped over for a corner.

Wantage had a few half-chances in the final period but nothing to seriously threaten Burton’s goal.

Ft 1-2. Willand now face a home tie against Mangotsfield Utd in the next round.
