Bridgwater United 3 Crawley Wasps 1

MATCH REPORT: CRAWLEY WASPS (H)

Bridgwater United 3 - 1 Crawley Wasps

Bridgwater United were looking to get back to winning ways after a 1-1 draw away at MK Dons last weekend. They certainly managed to do that as United put in a good performance against Crawley and came out at 3-1 winners, putting them third in the league table.

In the early stages of the game Bridgwater looked hungry to get a goal, a throw in reached Amy Goddard but her shot was over the bar.

However it didn’t take long for Bridgwater to find the breakthrough. On the tenth minute Chloe Gilroy scored a stunning goal and gave United the lead. Bridgwater had opportunities soon after the goal to double their lead but were unfortunate not to do so.

Chloe Gilroy almost got her second after a cross came in from Meesha Dudley-Jones but Gilroy  couldn’t execute her shot. Bridgwater then had to do some more defensive work to stop Crawley from getting the opportunity to shoot.

Not long after, Ellie Strippel got her first (and hopefully not last) goal of the season and gave Bridgwater a deserved two goal lead over Crawley.

United kept pushing for goals and Gilroy tried her luck from distance but it went over the crossbar. Amy Goddard recieved a yellow card after a foul on the edge of the box.

Just minutes after, Chloe Gilroy was fouled in the box and Bridgwater were awarded a penalty and Alice Griffiths made no mistake firing home, giving the team their third goal of the afternoon.

Seconds before half time Bridgwater had to defend as Crawley earned themselves a free kick. A great clearance from Leah Burridge meant that at half time it remained 3-0 to the home side.

In the second half, the home side had to play a different game of football. Like the second half of the game against Chichester, Bridgwater had to defend more as Crawley came back out fighting to get back into the game. The away side were awarded a free kick but it wasn’t on target.

Not long after the hour mark, Carter came on for Dudley-Jones. A few minutes later and Crawley managed to get a goal back. After the goal another substitution was made and Keeley Banfield came on for Charlotte Buxton. Chloe Gilroy was also brought off and Sydney Hinchcliffe made her way onto the pitch.

Throughout the game and especially during the second half, Amy Goddard (who captained the side) did some really good defensive work. Amy was also named player of the match!

Crawley were awarded a corner in the latter stages and there was a bit of carnage in the box as Beth Howard was forced to make a series of saves.

During added time both Anais Trinci and Laura Holden entered the pitch. The final whistle was blown a few minutes later and Bridgwater took 3 points from the game as Ellie Strippel, Chloe Gilroy and Alice Griffiths’ goals gave United a 3-1 win.
