Delayed report from September 12th:
From the Bridgwater website:
Bridgwater United 2 - 1 Maidenhead United
It was an opportunity for manager Jamie Sherwood to give different players more minutes and also bring some more youth into the side with Ellie Bell, Keeley Banfield and Jasmine Read all in the starting 11.
It was Ellie Bell who started off the home sides chances as on the fourth minute she took an attempt on goal but it didn’t challenge the keeper.
The early stages were quite positive from a Bridgwater point of a view. Alice Griffiths, who has played well consistently since the start of the season, was able to use her pace and run down the wing. She tried to get the cross in but the Maidenhead player was able to block it and United earned a corner which didn’t lead to anything.
At times during the first half Bridgwater seemed dominant and were the better side, creating chances but not being able to execute the final shot. However the home side were close to opening the scoring near the half hour mark when Ellie Strippel sent the ball in from the left hand side and Hinchcliffe managed to get her head to it but it was just wide of the post.
Not long after Sydney Hinchcliffe managed to get her goal! A long ball found Hinchcliffe and she was able to get behind the Maidenhead player and slot home giving Bridgwater the lead.
Bridgwater had one last opportunity before half time when Ellie Strippel made a good run down the right hand side and crossed to Holden. However her left footed shot hit the crossbar meaning Hinchcliffe’s goal gave Bridgwater a one goal advantage at the break.
Not long after the restart for the second half Maidenhead equalised. During periods of the second half Bridgwater had more defensive work to do than they did in the first half. After their goal Maidenhead picked up a bit of momentum and put up a good fight.
Just after the hour mark Jasmine Read was forced into to make a save after a quick counter from Maidenhead. Bridgwater had a few opportunities and Poppy Wilson had a close chance but it wasn’t enough to trouble the oppositions goalie.
Maidenhead were awarded a free kick and chose to shoot but Read was able to pull out a good save to keep the game level. A few minutes later down the other side of the pitch Bridgwater earned themselves a free kick. Alice Griffiths was the one to take it and it looked as though it was going in but it unfortunately hit the post and the rebound was cleared off of the line.
With not long to go it looked as though the game may go into extra time. However there was one last change for the home side.
Right before the full time whistle United were given a corner which led to the second goal as Amy Goddard was able to get her head to it sending Bridgwater through to the next round of the cup.
Manager Jamie Sherwood was able to share his thoughts on a game where Bridgwater had to fight until the very end to come away with the win: “No game is easy and we always pay the respect to any opposition threats and today was no different but in saying that today after the schedule we have had it was a great opportunity to give players competitive minutes compared to what some of the squad have had so far this season.
Today saw opportunity for us to further develop our younglings in a competitive environment with the likes of Keeley Banfield, Ellie Mae Bell and Jazz Read getting the chance to put their hard work in on the training ground into a senior team environment in doing joining the likes of Tia Asker and Jenna Markham of showcasing what they are capable of doing. The pathway of of younglings is crucial to the sustainability of this club.
Showing Jazz the faith we have in her as a young goalkeeper is crucial and her dedication and commitment she makes to become a senior goalkeeper needs to be rewarded but unfortunately in front of her we have Beth Howard who is for me the best keeper in the league so again today was a glimpse of what Jazz is about and I felt as though she did well organised her back line, recycle possession well and in my opinion was not protected properly for their goal.
Alice Griffiths who is still young herself although maybe further experienced than many of her age has been a breath of fresh air to the group, she has come in and is a no nonsense player who can recycle possession, break lines or can drive through the opposition with her cavalier runs she makes. She has settled excellent into the club and it’s really pleasing to see her playing with a smile, with an attitude and that is all part of the reason we remain unbeaten this season.”
