REPORT: BRISTOL CITY WOMEN 2-1 LEWES FC WOMEN

A 30-yard screamer from Abi Harrison and calmly taken penalty from Simran Jhamat helped City secure all three points in their first ever league game at the Robins High Performance Centre.

Scottish international Harrison unleashed her right foot after 66 minutes to give FC Lewes Women keeper Tatiana Saunders no chance and level the scores at 1-1.

And then when replacement Mel Johnson was brought down in the box with 15 minutes to go, summer signing Jhamat stepped up to slot home past her former club.

Secure game management secured the win in front of 507 supporters who relished the sunshine and skills on show.

THE BACKGROUND

City came into their first FA Women’s Championship fixture at the Robins High Performance Centre looking for a response to a 4-3 opening-day defeat at Crystal Palace.

The Robins came back at Palace three times with goals from Mel Johnson, Jhamat and Aggie Beever-Jones but they could not get over the line against Palace who were 2-0 up inside the first 15 minutes.

Manager Lauren Smith made three changes from the starting eleven that started at Hayes Lane, with Flo Allen, Beever-Jones and Jhamat taking over from Lia Cataldo, Johnson and Naomi Layzell.

WHAT HAPPENED

City trailed 1-0 at the break after Ini Umotong struck from the edge of the box in the 26th minute.

The Robins had their own chances but mainly from long-range with Flo Allen after 13 minutes and Jhamat after 23 minutes.

The home side looked comfortable in defence but they had goalkeeper Fran Bentley to thank for holding the deficit to one when she saved an angled shot from Umotong.

City grew into the game and Aggie Beever-Jones had a shot blocked straight after half-time while Jess Woolley’s cross was covered by Saunders.

Bentley got down well to save from Kallie Balfour and it wasn’t long before Harrison, spotting Saunders off her line, crashed in the equaliser.

That gave the Robins the impetus to push on and, boosted by replacements Johnson, Izzy Cook and Ffion Morgan, City started to roll.

After 75 minutes the pressure paid off when Johnson was fouled and Jhamat struck low and straight from the spot.

That left 20 minutes including added time for City to manage the final quarter and see the game out to the delight of a packed High Performance Centre.
