THE BACKGROUND

Lauren Smith’s side turned their attention back to the FA Championship after their midweek FA Continental Cup triumph over Lewes at the Robins HPC.

Sunday’s matchup would be the Robins last outing before the international window as they went in search of their third win inside seven days.

City made four changes to the starting XI with Fran Bentley returning between the sticks, Brooke Aspin lining up at centre back as well as Chloe Bull and Ava Kuyken starting in the midfield.

WHAT HAPPENED

The Robins controlled proceedings at the Orbital Fasteners Stadium from minute one, swiftly spreading the ball across the field as they probed for the afternoon’s opener.

City would get off the mark in the 12th minute, and in some style. Abi Harrison has been in scintillating form in front of goal, and she carried on her scoring streak with an incredible opener.

Full of confidence, she shifted the ball into space on the edge of the area and rifled the ball into the far corner of the net to bag her seventh goal in as many games.

Melissa Johnson then had an opportunity to double the visitors’ lead soon after as she bared down on the Watford goal, however Georgie Ferguson was equal to the striker’s best effort.

The Robins would go on to bag their second before the half-time break with Harrison turning provider for Chloe Bull.

Harrison burst past the Watford defence on the right-hand side to cut the ball back for the returning Bull, who coolly slotted home to double City’s advantage.

Some fine defending from Anne Miewald prevented Aggie Beever-Jones from scoring City’s third in the first half, before Emma Beckett had an attempt bravely blocked by the City defence at the opposite end.

Ronell Humes was introduced at half-time for the Golden Girls and she looked to make an instant impact, forcing Bentley into a solid stop early on in the second period.

City put the game to bed in the second half with their third and Bull’s second of the afternoon. The midfield maestro lashed a lethal half volley from outside the area to all but seal three points for City in Hertfordshire.

Watford would not be deterred as they hunted for a goal of their own. A goalmouth scramble from a corner presented a slight moment of danger for the Robins, but the defence hooked the ball clear of danger.

Amber-Keegan Stobbs would also try her luck towards the end of the 90 minutes, however Bentley comfortably saved to ensure City’s clean sheet remained intact.
