An own goal by Blackburn Rovers’ Helen Seed set the Robins off on the right foot, before goals by Abi Harrison and Aggie Beever-Jones sealed victory for City.

THE BACKGROUND

The Robins came into the game on the back of a run of three games unbeaten, most recently drawing 1-1 away to Coventry United on Monday night.

Head Coach Lauren Smith made three changes to the side that drew as Lia Cataldo, Simran Jhamat and Sophie Whitehouse were replaced in the starting eleven by Flo Allen, Gwen Davies and Fran Bentley.

WHAT HAPPENED

The first half was a tale of very few chances but City looked comfortable and confident.

They started on the front foot as Melissa Johnson went close following some pin-ball action in the Blackburn penalty area.

Harrison, who was causing problems for the visitors all afternoon, went through in the 23rd minute but her shot was blazed over the crossbar.

Bristol City then had a slice of good fortune as Harrison sent a cross into the box from the left which was turned into the Rover’s net by defender Helen Seed, much to the delight of the 3,000 in attendance that packed out the Lower Lansdown Stand.

The Robins would have been happy with how the first half unfolded, surrendering very few chances to the visitors whilst managing to create a number of good openings.

Much like the first half, City came out in the second half on the front foot. Aggie Beever-Jones, who tormented the Blackburn defence, tricked her way through a couple of tackles before laying off Harrison, her shot was well dealt with by Alexandra Brooks in the Blackburn net.

City then doubled their lead in the 71st minute, Beever-Jones latched onto a pass down the right and tested the goalkeeper, but she could only parry it as far as Harrison, who made no mistake in scoring the Robins’ second of the afternoon.

Immediately after the goal, City almost bagged their third. Beever-Jones cut in from the right and hit a superb curling strike that had the ‘keeper beaten but it clattered off the woodwork.

However, the winger wasn’t to be denied of her goal as she picked out the top corner with a sublime left-footed effort which would ultimately seal a dominant display from the Robins.
