Goals from Aggie Beever-Jones, Abi Harrison and Mel Johnson secured the victory as City rode the fee-good factor from Sunday's FA Championship win over Blackburn.

THE BACKGROUND

After collecting a big three points at Ashton Gate on Sunday it was now time for City to focus their minds back on the Contitental Cup.

They faced fellow Championship side Lewes in their second group game and hoped to make it two wins from two after winning 1-0 away to Reading last month, Abigail Harrison with the only goal of the game. City came into this game unbeaten in their last four games, winning three of the four.

Head Coach Lauren Smith made five changes, including giving a first start to Academy product Jasmine Bull.

WHAT HAPPENED

Within the first minute Harrison was played through on goal but Lewes defender Izzy Collins was there to shield the ball away from her and towards her goalkeeper Shanell Salgado.

Just minutes later City recorded their first shot on goal as Beever-Jones drove down the right-hand side and brought the ball onto her left, eventually taking shot which Salgado quickly got down to her left to block the winger’s attempt.

In the space of a few minutes the home side had three great chances to get the first goal of the game, the first one falling to Simian Jhamat as she was played through on goal, but the defender read the danger and got the ball clear.

The next opportunity was for Johnson who was played through, but again the Lewes defence were quick to stop the Robins player get a shot away. The final chance came when Beever-Jones played the ball to Harrison after a lovely bit of trickery on the right wing but the striker failed to get a strong shot away and the chance resulted in the away side regaining possession.

Nineteen minutes in and it was time for another shot on goal through Harrison, this one deflecting out for a corner and coming to nothing for City.

Halfway through the first half and the away side had their first attempt on goal as Lottie Sharp tried to catch the City goalkeeper Sophie Whitehouse off guard when she took a shot from an acute angle. The attempt failed to cause Whitehouse any problems as she calmly caught the ball then played it out quickly to her team-mates in front of her.

Just past the half-hour mark it was Harrison trying make things happen yet again when Jhamat won the ball near the centre circle and played the ball to the forward, who tried to find a team-mate in the box.

Moments later Beever-Jones drove through the middle and played Johnson in and she hit a thunderous strike that flew over the goalkeeper and crashed the bar.

The breakthrough came when Beever-Jones was there to put her side 1-0 up in the 36th minute with a delightful shot just inside the box with the outside of her right foot. The ball slotted into the bottom right-hand corner giving the opposition goalie no chance.

A few minutes later City had the ball in the back of the net again as the goalscorer played Harrison in and she slotted it into the back of the net but it was ruled out for offside.

The in-form Harrison then had her goal when Johnson drove down the left-hand side and found her teammate who tapped it in from close range.

In the closing stages it was the City winger at it again as Beever-Jones’ shot from the right-hand side crashed the post, the number 23 was inches away from her second of the night.

Just seconds into the second half and it was 3-0 to the hosts as Johnson was played through on goal and made no mistake in slotting it into the bottom left-hand corner.

Eight minutes into the second half and Heidi Logan reduced the deficit from just outside the box into the top corner, 3-1.

As we approached the hour mark the visitors tried to get their second as Frida Ayisi played in a cross from the right wing trying to find a teammate in the middle but again Whitehouse was there to calmly stop any threat on her goal.

Fifty-two minutes in and Johnson had an opportunity to double her goal tally as she drove into the box from the right and her shot from a tight angle was saved by Salgado.

Five minutes before the final whistle Lucy Ashworth-Clifford tried to test the keeper from just outside the box but her left-footed shot failed to make Whitehouse work as she was there again to collect.

Deep into additional time substitute Izzy Cook tried as shot from range on the left but Salgado was there again to stop the home side adding a fourth.
