Melksham Town FC vs Willand Rovers FC
Match Report
Willand lose entertaining match at Melksham.
Willand, started this match brightly with their quick passing moves down both flanks testing the home defence in the early minutes.
On 8 minutes though the visitors gave possession away cheaply from a throw in on the half-way line; Melksham broke quickly down the left, the winger cut inside & shot forcing a good save from George Burton. However, Burton’s save fell to home forward Hopkins who drove the ball home. 1-0.
The game was now end to end, with Willand making good headway down both wings. Good chances on 22, 31 and 34 minutes ended in nothing, being dealt with by some good home defending.
On 36 minutes Melksham scored their second: after initially disallowing the goal for off-side the ref consulted with his linesman and awarded the goal, adjudging the ball was turned into his own net by the unfortunate Josh Searle rather than the attacker. 2-0.
On 39 minutes Matt Hall in the home goal makes another fine save to deny the visitors, getting down well to push Ben Griffith’s shot behind for a corner.
What looked a clear penalty to Willand on 42 minutes for handball was not seen by the ref; a lucky escape for the hosts.
Ht 2-0, but ironically Willand having had much of the play but not much luck in front of goal.
Willand came out and started the second half by bringing on Louis J-C & Will Richards for Scott Piper & Bailey Kempster. Both were straight into the action, Richards making a driving run from left back, slotting the ball through to LJC who shot was again well saved by Hall.
Willand’s early second half pressure paid of on 57 minutes; Archie Reay picked the ball up on the half-way line and surged forward. Seeing Hall off his line he unleashed a fierce shot from 30 yards which went over the keeper and dipped just under the bar. 2-1 and game on!
Willand kept applying pressure and were now enjoying long periods of possession and just 10 minutes later they get a deserved equaliser. Ben Griffith picked up the ball on the right just inside the Melksham half, cuts inside & surges forward before taking a shot-come-cross which looped over the keeper and into the net. 2-2.
Willand were now in ascendancy and looking the more likely victor. However, on 77 minutes they were caught by a sucker punch. Melksham made a quick counter-attack down the right, a pinpoint pass from Will Christopher finding Jake Mawford who controls well and guides the ball into the net. 3-2.
Just two minutes later the hosts were 4-2 up: another quick counter-attack, a great cross in from the left which is headed down by Christopher and hit home by Hendy.
Willand still looked dangerous and kept applying pressure. A combination of Hall in the home goal making a number of fine saves in the dying minutes and some desperate clearances by the home defenders saw Melksham see the game out to full-time and keep the score at 4-2.
A disappointing day for Rovers who, for most of the game looked in control, but were undone by some sloppy defending which resulted in conceding some cheap goals.
