Cheltenham Town claimed only a second League One away win of the season at Gillingham's Priestfield.

Sean Long and Alfie May did the damage as the Robins ran out as winners against the Gills in the fourth meeting between the two clubs this season.

Having already faced each other three times in cup competitions, Michael Duff's men ensured they had the upper hand in the first League fixture between the two on a successful trip to Kent thanks to Long's first half goal and May's calm finish after the break.

Ellis Chapman was welcomed back into the side after a recent lay-off, while May was handed a starting berth alongside Kyle Joseph after his goal in Saturday's win over Shrewsbury - tasked with operating in a right wing back role.

The experienced John Akinde caused early trouble for the hosts when he got through and fired wide in the opening exchanges, while Chris Hussey's free kick was well-struck but confidently held by Jamie Cumming in the Gillingham goal.

The Gills on loan Chelsea stopper was then at full stretch with his legs to deny Alfie May when he had burst in behind.

On the half hour mark Cheltenham took the lead. Long was the first to react in the box when Hussey's whipped corner wasn't cleared, and he slammed in.

The home side created a number of good opportunities in an attempt to level at the back end of the half.

Harvey Lintott should have done better with his finish from Akinde's pull back, while Olly Lee's thumping effort was kept out by Scott Flinders against one of his former clubs.

The biggest opportunity to equalise came on the stroke of half time when Akinde was sent clear in behind on the right but saw his low shot agonisingly roll wide.

Kyle Vassell had a great chance to make it 2-0 at the start of the second half. Slipped in by May, he couldn't find a way past Cumming though.

The duo combined for what would be the second goal later in the half, with Vassell this time turning provider.

His header into space from Lewis Freestone's clipped forward pass allowed May to run forward into a large gap at the back, and he kept his cool to round Cumming and hit the back of the net.

There was little in response from the hosts as they showed limited threat at getting back into the game.

The introduction of Callum Wright as a substitute though for Cheltenham was a welcome sight after the Leicester City loanees absence since September due to injury.

He forced an effort in stoppage time that was charged down as the Robins confidently held on to make it back-to-back wins in League One.
