Willand Rovers FC vs Winchester City FC
Match Report
Rovers lose 1-3 at home to high flying Winchester City on a wet & windy Wednesday evening at Silver Street.
It’s becoming a recurring theme: Rovers are having the lion’s share of possession and playing some attractive football, but are just not being clinical in the final third to convert the opportunities they create!
A brace from the visitor’s Warren Bentley on 25 and 75 minutes and a dubious penalty on 73 minutes, converted by Craig Feeney, saw the visitors into a 0-3 lead. Bailey Kempster pulled a goal back for Rovers on 82 minutes after a good spell of pressure, converting a Lewis Hill cross following a corner.
The first half was a scrappy affair with Willand possibly edging the game until Bentley drove home on 25 minutes. Rovers continued to press but with little cutting edge up front, although Archie Reay did see a shot hit the post and another fly over the bar. Ht 1-0.
Willand came out for the second half & were totally in control, dominating their visitors. On one of the occasional Winchester counter attacks on 70 mins the ball, after ping-ponging in the hosts penalty area, was adjudged by the referee Carl Peters to have hit a Willand defender’s arm. Penalty! 0-2.
On the next Winchester attack following the restart the Rovers defence was caught flat-footed as the ball fell to Bentley who drove the ball home. 0-3.
This lead to a frantic final few minutes during which Willand created enough chances to win the game! Kempster, Jack Rice and Lewis Hill all having shots scrambled away by the visitor’s defence or saved by keeper Philpott. Ft 1-3.
A disappointing night for Rovers who yet again perhaps deserved something from the game. Onward to BMF on Saturday when, hopefully, we’ll get the rub of the green & convert the chances we’re creating.
