๐ REPORT: LONDON CITY LIONESSES 2-3 BRISTOL CITY WOMEN
SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 27TH 2022
City Women made it three wins on the bounce with an enthralling 3-2 away win against London City Lionesses at Princes Park.
Goals from scoring machine Abi Harrison, Aggie Beever-Jones and captain Aimee Palmer saw the Robins home on the back of a gutsy display that lifted them into second place in the table.
๐ง BACKGROUND
Lauren Smith made two changes to the team that beat Durham 3-0 away from home in the Robins' last outing as they looked to leapfrog The Pride in the FA Women's Championship table.
Both Lia Cataldo and Beever-Jones came into the side for the injured Satara Murray and Mel Johnson.
✍️ WHAT HAPPENED?
The Robins started brightly with Chloe Bull finding Harrison in the box but City's No.7 couldn't connect and the ball drifted out for a goalkick.
Moments later, Ffion Morgan drove forward and tried to play Beever-Jones in but the hosts got there quick to clear their lines.
Smith's side had to soak up some pressure after a few chances went the way of The Pride but Fran Bentley was there to keep the ball out of the net.
Harrison had a chance to put her side ahead but her shot from an acute angle was saved by Shae Yรกรฑez
In the space of minutes London City Lionesses had two great chances to open the scoring but the post and a block from Naomi Layzell denied the home side.
Just before the half-hour mark Beever-Jones won the Robins a penalty when she was brought down in the box. City's top scorer Harrison made no mistake in putting the Robins one up when she smashed the ball into the roof of the net from the spot.
However, minutes later the hosts were level through Lily Agg after a goalmouth scramble from a resulting corner and the teams went into the break level.
⏱ HALF-TIME
The Robins came flying out the traps at the start of the second half with Beever-Jones putting the visitors ahead when Ella Powell fired the ball across the box which the 18-year-old dispatched beautifully with a first-time volley.
The skipper made it 3-1 in the 58th minute when she fired a free-kick into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.
Five minutes later the hosts pulled one back when Alli Palisch found the back of the net with her left foot after cutting in from the right.
Despite London City Lionesses' efforts to get something from the game, the Robins solid defence in the final 20 minutes earned Smith's side all three points.
