Southampton 1 Bridgwater United 1

MATCH REPORT: SOUTHAMPTON (A)

Southampton 1 - 1 Bridgwater United

United return from South Coast with a point.

Bridgwater United grabbed a thoroughly deserved 89th minute equaliser on Sunday as they took a point home from Southampton.

The result which may have put a slight dent in Southampton’s title challenge came through a evenly contested match.

The game was in doubt early on with the overnight rain at AFC Totton but come kick off the Winter sun beated down.

United whose performances again improved were disciplined and looked threatening in wide areas. This limited Saints to no real chances in the first half whilst Bridgy couldn’t get in the end of deliveries from Markham, Buxton, and Wilson-White.

It was all square as the teams went in at half time.

Saints come out firing and United were under fire up until the hour mark, when on form Pusey scored yet another league goal.

Bridgwater responded with a raft of changes and regrouped quickly. As the match headed towards the close it was Bridgwater who looked like they had control as Saints dropped off. Markham was a real pain whilst Ackerman’s speed and crosses were an outlet.

Bridgwater attacked down the left flank, Ackerman drove the ball low ball into the penalty area finding Potts who cut back to Markham, to direct her low effort beyond Rendell and into her bottom-right corner on 89 minutes.

With discipline and quality, the team showed their ability to compete with teams at the top end of the table arguably for the first time this season.

Manager, Adam Murry, “This result further proves what I have been saying about this squad – we are fully capable of playing at the highest level. We realised that today. I’m really proud of the girls and really excited to take them into the first County Cup Final as Bridgwater United, and the first for the club in 10 years.”
