Larkhall Athletic vs Willand Rovers FC
Match Report
Rovers slump to 1-0 defeat at Larkhall Athletic.
Despite dominating much of the game Willand lost to the odd goal at Plain Ham. This was scored in the 32nd minute after Rovers carelessly gave the ball away during a sweeping attacking move and fell victim to the sucker-punch of a quick counter attack by the hosts that was calmly slotted home by Alex Lambert under the despairing dive of George Burton.
Throughout the game it was Rovers that controlled possession, looking calm and well assured at the back – another good display by the back four of Bailey, Poole, Richards and Searle is worthy of note. Willand’s approach play was generally good, however it was in the final third that we failed to make any real impression on the solid Lark’s defence ably marshalled by captain Josh Jones, often trying to over complicate and over-play the ball rather than make the simple quick passes to unlock the hosts.
The Larks also huffed and puffed without much cohesion in their play or without really creating any clear-cut scoring opportunities apart from their well taken breakaway goal.
So this ended up a disappointing day for Rovers: dominating the game without creating, a 1-0 defeat and losing the influential Ryan Guppy to injury. One bright spark was the debut of new young forward Lewis Wilson who looks a promising addition to the squad for the final games of the season.
Improvement will be needed for the visit of high-flying Winchester City next Saturday if we are to avoid defeat again.
