Willand overwhelmed by AFC Totton at Silver Street.
AFC Totton reinforced their promotion credentials as they hit four goals at a wet and windy Stan Robinson Stadium on Wednesday night.
Rovers had no real answer to the pace and slick attacking play of the visitors, with the front four of Jordan Ngalo, Hisham Kasimu, Ethan Taylor and Sam Griffin causing mayhem in the home defence all evening.
Attacking duo Taylor and Kasimu both scored twice to make it a wretched night for the hosts.
The visitors opened the scoring with less than a minute on the clock after a slick attacking move down the left ended with Taylor blasting past George Burton in the home goal.
Willand settled and applied a bit of pressure of their own and on 18 minutes Ryan Guppy saw his acrobatic overhead kick hit the post and rebound to a defender. This enabled Totton to mount a quick counter-attack; and quick it was, Kasimu received the ball wide on the half-way line and sprinted forward and shot into the net giving Burton no chance. 0-2.
The Stags continued to dominate play for the remainder of the first half but, due to some desperate defending & good keeping by Burton, could not add to their score. Ht 0-2.
On 49 minutes Kasimu added his second after another speedy break down the left, rounding the keeper to tuck away unchallenged. 0-3.
Russell Jee decided to wring the changes on 50 minutes, bringing on Ben Griffith & Rhys Thomas in place of Louis JC & Bailey Kempster. The reorganisation seemed to give a little more balance and on 57m, after some good build up play, Noah Coppin struck a shot from the edge of the area … only to see it hit the post and bounce harmlessly away! On 65m a Will Richards shot was blocked & diverted out for a corner.
With 80 minutes on the clock Taylor scored his second with a diving header after some good interplay down the left. 0-4.
Conceding the fourth seemed to spur Rovers into action and they started applying some intense pressure on the visitor’s goal. This paid of on 84m when Tom Bath headed home Noah Coppin’s cross from the right.
Ft 1-4 and perhaps a reality check for Rovers as they were brought back to earth from their weekend victory by one of the teams that will surely be in the mix for the league title come the end of the season.
