THE BACKGROUND

City had won their two previous encounters at the Robins High Performance Centre in the FA Championship and Continental Cup.

Head Coach Lauren Smith made three changes from the team that started against Watford with Naomi Layzell, Jasmine Bull and Ffion Morgan coming in for Gwen Davies, Aggie Beever-Jones and Ella Powell.

WHAT HAPPENED

City had a chance in the opening minutes as Chloe Bull played in Abbie Harrison but the Lewes goalkeeper Shanell Salgado was out quick to collect.

Moments later Chloe Bull played another through-ball, this time in the direction of Morgan though again the visitors had it covered and cleared the danger.

The visitors came close to an opener when Lara Miller put in a dangerous in-swinging corner from the left but Fran Bentley was there to punch away the ball.

Just over a quarter of an hour in and Harrison was inches away from the first goal of the game as Ava Kuyken played her in and the in form striker was there to try and lob Salgado, she beat the keeper but was just wide of the post.

In the space of just 30 seconds both Kuyken and Chloe Bull had chances to get on the scoresheet but again the away side were there to block the danger.

Twenty-man minutes in and Naomi Layzell played Melissa Johnson in from the right but the ball was just behind the attacker and her shot failed to trouble the goalkeeper.

Just before the half-hour mark City had their opener through Harrison and she smashed the ball into the top right-hand corner from the left.

Late on in the first half Freda Ayisi tried to get her side an equaliser as she tried a shot from distance but her shot was wide of the post and out for a City goal-kick.

Straight from kick-off, half-time substitute Beever-Jones made it 2-0 with a delightful shot that looped over the goalkeeper.

Just five minutes later it was time for captain Harrison to add to her tally as she was played down the right by Morgan and dinked the ball over Salgado to make it 3-0 to the home side.

Chloe Bull then helped herself to a goal when Morgan’s cross from the right fell to her in the box and she was there to tap it home from close range.

Just past the hour mark Morgan tried one from distance but Salgado was there to collect but minutes later the Welsh international got her goal as her corner curled straight into the back of the net.
