Match Report

Willand slump to 0-2 defeat against Cirencester Town at Silver Street after enduring a frustrating afternoon on Saturday.

Willand started brightly as they have done in games recently. In the second minute Ben Griffiths picked up through ball, rounded the defender but shot tamely at Alex Harris in the Cirencester goal.

This was the pattern of the first half, Rovers creating some good chances only to see them ended by poor and wayward final shots – several good opportunities were spurned by Griffiths, Tom Bath, and Archie Reay.

Although Willand were dominant in the first period the Centurions looked dangerous on the break and the hosts were grateful to Kieran Bailey, marshalling the defence, and keeper George Burton who made a string of fine saves to keep the visitors at bay. Ht 0-0.

The second half started as the first had concluded with Rovers making most of the play and the visitors looking dangerous on the break.

On 50 minutes, and perhaps against the run of play, the visitors were awarded a penalty: Will Richards was harshly adjudged to have handled the ball after blocking a shot. The Cirencester captain Jake Lee made no mistake from the spot. 0-1.

Things went from bad to worse on 60 minutes when Ryan Guppy received his second yellow card of the afternoon. However, even with ten men it was Rovers that continued to play the better football and looked most likely to score.

Although most of the possession was theirs, Rovers couldn’t create any clear chances bar hitting the post on 75 minutes.

On 88 minutes the game was sealed by the visitors. A break down the left wing saw the ball fall to Levi Irving who raced into the box and calmy struck a fierce drive past the out-rushing George Burton. Ft 0-2.

The hosts must rue missing those first half chances only to be caught out in the second half by a harsh penalty decision and losing the influential Ryan Guppy.

Let’s hope we can convert some of the chances that we are freely creating when we host Plymouth Parkway on Monday 27 December.
