Frome Town vs Willand Rovers FC
Match Report
Willand slump to defeat at Frome.
Frome Town maintained their position at the top of the table as they hit three goals at a wet and windy Badgers Hill Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Rovers started well, playing the ball around confidently and keeping possession for long spells, but without any cutting edge to threaten the home goal.
It was the hosts who had the first real opportunity on 15 minutes, Jon Davies shooting straight at Rovers keeper George Burton from close range after some neat build-up play.
On 19 minutes Frome took the lead; a cross from the right was skilfully headed in by Kane Simpson. Simpson darted in front of Kieran Bailey at the near post to guide a glancing header past Burton and into the net.
Willand responded well to falling behind, and continued to have the majority of ball possession but still without creating any clear cut chances.
On 27 minutes Rovers cruely found themselves 2-0 down after a wonder goal by the home captain Teale. There ref awarded the hosts a very soft free kick on the half-way line. Teale spotted Burton off his line as he prepared to take the free-kick, he shot quickly over the goalkeeper’s head and into the net. 2-0, but perhaps not a true reflection of the play.
Rovers had a good chance to reduce the deficit on 46 minutes when jack Rice’s shot was well saved at the near post by the home keeper Carey. Ht 2-0.
Willand again started the second half well. On 50 minutes Will Richards was elbowed in the face as he glided past a Frome midfielder. The referee booked two Frome players and Richards following the scuffle that ensued after the original incident.
The match was effectively over in the 57th minute when, after some Willand pressure, Simpson showed a delicate touch to control a long ball up field, that wasn’t dealt with by the Rovers defence, before back-heeling into the path of Ollis who blasted into the goal. 3-0
Willand continued to have plenty of the ball as they searched for a consolation goal, but Frome defended well and Carey was only tested on a couple of occasions from distance.
Ft 3-0. Rovers were guilty of producing some good build-up play but with no end product & were ruthlessly punished by a more attackingly sharp Frome side. Hopefully our fortunes will change when we entertain Cirencester Town next Saturday.
