Winchester City FC vs Willand Rovers FC
Match Report
Willand win a good point at Winchester City.
An entertaining game on Saturday afternoon saw Winchester City and Willand Rovers share the points after a 1-1 draw.
The two goals were scored in the space of one minute with Rovers taking the lead with Louis Jagger-Cane blasting the ball in from 25 yards on 37 minutes after a good break down the right. Just one minute later, straight from the kick-off, Winchester equalised with Mlambo forcing the ball home.
The pattern of the game was set early on with both sides intent on playing attractive attacking football, leading to an end-to-end match. On 4 minutes the initial Willand pressure was rewarded with a free kick on the edge of the box; this was well saved by the keeper. On 10 minutes another fine move set Noah Coppin through on goal; his shot beat the keeper but hit the post and came back into play.
Winchester used the rebound well, surging forward on a quick counter; a desperate last-ditch tackle in the Willand box brought the Winchester attacker down: Penalty! George Burton saves the spot kick well, and Winchester hit the parried save against the crossbar. Score remains 0-0.
The first half continued with Rovers having the best of the play although Winchester looked very dangerous on the counterattack. Charlie Philpott in the home goal was keeping Winchester in the game, making a string of fine saves from Thomas, Coppin & Jagger-Cane.
Willand started the second half brightly, Coppin being a continual thorn in the Winchester side down the right wing. His efforts were increasingly being snubbed out by cynical fouls by the Winchester defenders. On 78 minutes after a succession of such fouls Noah’s was yellow carded for retaliation; this was followed just 7 minutes later with a second yellow for a mis-timed challenge. Willand down to 10 men for the final minutes.
Rovers continued to search for the winner: a quick break on 87 minutes saw Jagger-Cane through, his shot beat the keeper but came back off the crossbar.
After this Winchester applied some pressure of their own, hitting the post and forcing Burton into making two great saves. The Willand defence held firm and closed the game out. Ft 1-1.
A very entertaining match and probably the right result on the day.
