Caitlin Foord celebrates scoring against Tottenham Hotspur

HOW IT HAPPENED

By Nik Brumsack at Meadow Park

Caitlin Foord's brace, plus goals from Mana Iwabuchi, Lotte Wubben-Moy and Nikita Parris saw us advance beyond Tottenham Hotspur to reach the semi-final of the Women’s FA Cup in style on Wednesday evening.

On an evening where Tobin Heath made her first start since joining the club late last week and Jordan Nobbs returned from injury, we recovered from conceding early to blow away our north London rivals in an irresistible first-half display.

The Jonas Eidevall era has started in scintillating fashion - this was our eighth successive win under our new boss. We fell behind in a match for the first time under his leadership, but came roaring back with a performance full of attacking prowess. We’ve now scored 31 goals since Eidevall took charge.

For all the palpable excitement around Meadow Park at kick-off, the visitors started brightly - and within three minutes, they had the lead, with Rachel Williams arrowing a fine left-foot shot into the far corner after we were unable to clear a set-piece.

The early setback forced us into action, with the dangerous Heath instrumental to much of our attacking play. She could have had a penalty when sent tumbling to the floor after combining well with Nobbs, but still managed to dig out a cross which neither Iwabuchi or Parris could turn home in the ensuing scramble.

The pressure was mounting - and it came as no surprise when we drew level on the quarter-hour. Again, Heath was involved, latching on to Lia Walti’s defence-splitting pass before cutting the ball back to the edge of the area. It fell nicely for Iwabuchi, who took a touch to set herself before curling her shot beyond former Gunner, Rebecca Spencer.

Just after the half hour, the turnaround was complete. Heath’s free-kick wasn’t cleared, allowing Wubben-Moy to power home a shot via a deflection.

Four minutes later, we were 3-1 in front - Foord clinically firing home to cap an intricate team move down the flank.

And there was still time for Parris to beat Spencer to a free-kick and glance home a header as we went into the break in complete control.

Eidevall shuffled his pack somewhat after the break as we saw the match out - Heath and Nobbs were replaced just after the hour, with Viki Schnaderbeck making her first appearance since November 8, 2020 in the closing stages.

Foord added further gloss on the scoreline late on, finishing a flowing team move with aplomb to put the seal on a comprehensive win over north London rivals.

AFC Bournemouth remain unbeaten to start the season but were left frustrated by a 0-0 draw away at Peterborough United.

Goalless at the interval, Morgan Rogers went closest after a jinking run that saw him beat defenders but, at the last, not the 'keeper.

Good chances fell to substitute Jaidon Anthony and Dominic Solanke after the restart but the visitors were unable to break down a resolute United defence and were made to settle for a point on the road.

Scott Parker made three changes to his starting line-up from the weekend win against Luton Town: David Brooks, Rogers and Jack Stacey drafted in from the off at London Road.

The sun close to being fully set and an autumnal nip in the air, the action got under way in Cambridgeshire.

An uneventful opening ten minutes allowed the two teams to size each other up, Jefferson Lerma twice going close to threading the needle with through balls but just unable to find his ultimate targets.

Rogers then came close to breaking the deadlock as he burst past men into the box, the target coming into view the forward looked to finish over 'keeper Dai Cornell but his shot was blocked behind.

Stacey charged into the right-hand side of the box, his low centre scrambled clear, three minutes late Solanke pouncing on a loose ball in the area but firing over the target.

Jack Taylor had a long-range effort deflect behind in one of United's first forward forays, Bournemouth also able to clear the resulting corner.

The Posh came close to finding the opener after a good move allowed a bouncing ball to come in from the right flank, Jorge Grant looked odds on to score from six yards out only for Gary Cahill to make a timely and impressive intervention, the ball falling safely.

An audacious effort fully 45 yards out from Taylor was just a foot or two over the bar with the best first-half opportunities coming from such hard-earned half chances.

Ryan Christie ploughed in a low 20-yard effort that was comfortably saved by Cornell, before a banana-arched effort from Philip Billing found the stand instead of its target.

Brooks drifted forwards and played into the feet of Solanke whose backheel was a dangling Posh leg away from finding a Cherries attacker in the clear and set to pull the trigger, the movement the final action of the opening period.

After the 15-minute rest, the game restarted without changes in personnel for either side.

Some patient working of the ball around the Posh penalty area won the visitors a corner. Played short, a powered low pass picked out Brooks but the Wales international's connection sent the ball high and over.

The momentum was growing for Bournemouth, Solanke flicking Rogers' corner into the side netting at the near post from a corner.

The threats on the Peterborough goal continued, the same two players combining when Rogers passed through for Solanke, the striker cutting inside though his shot was comfortably gathered by Cornell.

Both sides made a double substitution at the same juncture just past the hour mark, Parker introducing Anthony and Ben Pearson as he looked to turn the away pressure into an away goal.

Anthony made an immediate impact with a cross that was just intercepted by Cornell, Jamal Lowe soon entering the action with the Cherries' final change of the evening.

A delightful Solanke turn on halfway set him free and running into space, he pulled back for Anthony only for his goalward effort to be blocked by a defender when the long-awaited opener seemed on the cards.

Solanke had two bites at the cherry following a cross from the right. First the striker looked to glance home a header, the ball falling back into his path off a defender he slashed at a better chance and could only find the home supporters behind the goal.

Into the final five minutes and the breakthrough was still proving elusive. Peterborough made rare inroads with a couple of slung-in long throws that the away defence headed to safety.

With ten seconds of normal time to go the Cherries won a corner, Solanke meeting it when well placed but directing his header a yard over the crossbar.

Six minutes of additional time were signalled from the touchline, and in the dying moments of those minutes the Cherries also got their reward. Lowe pushed forwards, delivered a dangerous ball that looked to be breaking for Solanke, only to be smuggled away at the last.

The final whistle soon was blown as Bournemouth collected an important point away at London Road.

Sunderland 5 Cheltenham Town 0

Report & highlights: Sunderland 5-0 Robins

Cheltenham Town completed a marathon week of matches in the north with a comprehensive defeat by Sunderland.

Michael Duff's men have travelled more than 1,000 miles in seven days to face Preston North End of the Championship and two League One giants in Wigan Athletic and Lee Johnson's side here at the hugely impressive Stadium of Light.

True they were also missing key players through the spine of the team with the likes of Will Boyle, Callum Wright and Kyle Vassell missing, and there is no doubting Sunderland's title credentials.

But Duff's depleted side were the architects of their own downfall on Wearside with all the damage being done before the break.

"I've said all along that could happen," Duff said afterwards.

"We've had a really tough week and we've got four or five big players that aren't available.

"When we come to clubs like this we have to do more but we can't carry those type of injuries when you come to these type of places.

"We looked young and naive today. The frustration is we've conceded from two set pieces again, and we don't look like scoring from a set play so it's difficult.

"They're not in our league. We know that. If anyone expected us to come to these last two games and take points they would be optimistic.

"We have to do more. We have to fight more but it's not all doom and gloom. We'll stick together and learn."

It was already going to be an uphill task against the former Premier League outfit but a series of sloppy mistakes handed the the Black Cats a three-goal advantage at the interval.

Sunderland were dominant from the start and Mattie Pollock was called into a pair of last ditch clearances in the opening exchanges which lead to the first corner of the game.

From there Bailey Wright headed the hosts into an early lead, meeting Aiden McGeady's corner from the left with a downward header to beat Scott Flinders with 11 minutes on the clock.

Pollock was a whisker away from an immediate response with a header of his own but it dropped inches over the bar, his side's only chance of the opening 45 minutes.

The second arrived after a mistake by Lewis Freestone, gifting the ball back to Winchester who found Ross Stewart in the centre and he made no mistake.

Stewart then guided McGeady's cross over from a great position in the centre before heading another over moments later.

But he added the third seven minutes before the interval, this time meeting Carl Winchester's centre to complete the easiest of finishes.

Broadhead should have made it four on the stroke of half-time but he blasted high and wide.

Alfie May replaced Pollock at the interval and Duff reverted to a 4-4-2 formation for the remainder of the game, matching Lee Johnson's side.

May vollied the first chance of the second period a couple of minutes after the restart but at the other end, Sunderland continued where they left off with a chance for Stewart, who was denied by a diving tackle by Sean Long.

Flinders then produced smart saves to deny Aiden O'Brien and Corry Evans.

However the fourth and fifth goals arrived in quick succession through Luke O'Nien and subsitute Leon Dajaku to put the seal on a big win for the promotion hopefuls.

It was Duff's heaviest defeat as manager and a steep learning curve for these players but they must now must quickly prepare for this Saturday's match against Rotherham United.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

By Rob Kelly at Emirates Stadium

WHAT HAPPENED

We won the north London derby with a dazzling display of first-half football at a sun-drenched Emirates Stadium to blow Tottenham away on Sunday.

We came into this game off the back of three successive wins, and with confidence returning we immediately stamped our authority on the game.

With Granit Xhaka and Thomas Partey snapping into tackles, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang fired up and making his presence felt, we unsettled the visitors all over the park.

Roared on by an incredible atmosphere inside Emirates Stadium, we took the lead with a goal made in Hale End as Bukayo Saka picked out Emile Smith Rowe in the area and the 21-year-old slotted home to spark jubilant celebrations.

Partey then saw a goalbound shot palmed around the post by Hugo Lloris as we continued to pile on the pressure, but the Tottenham goalkeeper could do nothing about our second.

Surely already a contender for goal of the season, the move started from the back as Xhaka did well to turn out of pressure on the edge of his area, launching a slick counter attack involving Martin Odegaard, Kieran Tierney, Aubameyang and Smith Rowe.

Our captain played the opening goalscorer into space with a superb flick and Smith Rowe raced into the area, before cutting the ball back to Aubameyang to finish left footed – and the forward celebrated a la Thierry Henry in the corner.

It was just reward for a team performance full of energy, endeavour and quality – and we didn’t have long to wait for our third as our Hale End graduates combined again.

This time Smith Rowe collected the ball in his own half, and played the ball into space on the right for Saka. The England international raced at goal, and after being tackled by Harry Kane in the area, the ball broke kindly for him and he slotted low beyond Lloris to make it three.

Wow.

The visitors struggled to mount a response before the interval, although Kane did head inches wide from a corner but they did pose more of a threat after half time.

Aaron Ramsdale had to be alert to palm away a Kane shot, and then minutes later the England captain lifted a shot over our goalkeeper but it drifted wide.

But back we came, with the irrepressible Saka cutting in from the right and calling Lloris into action again with a curling shot.

Son pulled one back for the visitors towards the end, but it did little to take the gloss off a fine afternoon in N5 as we made it four wins on the bounce.

WHAT IT MEANS

WHAT’S NEXT

We head to Brighton & Hove Albion next Saturday evening, and then it’s the second international break of the season.

We return on Monday, October 18 as we hist Crystal Palace at the Emirates, before games against Aston Villa, Leeds and Leicester to close out October.
