Match Report
Willand Rovers and Millbrook of the Western League provided an entertaining afternoon of FA Cup action on Saturday in a game that ended 3-3.
Willand started brighlty dominating possession with the speed of their front three often catching the Millbrook defenders in nomansland. Jagger-Cane had a glorious opportunity in the first minute when the visiting keeper spilled the ball only for his shot to miss the target.
Willand’s dominance finally reaped dividends when Glenn Gould struck a fierce shot into the net on 14 minutes after Jager-Cane’s initial shot came back off the bar.
As the first half progressed Willand’s dominance continued but they were unable to add any further score. It was noticeable that Millbrook were gaining confidence and with increasing frequency threatening on the counter attack, with ex-Willand player Rikki Shepherd looking particularly dangerous.
Ht 1-0.
The second half started with an immediate equaliser for the visitors: that man Rikki Shepherd on target straight from the kick off.
The second half continued as the first had ended, Willand playing some attractive approach football with no end product and Millbrook defending stoutly and relying on quick counter attacks. In the 67th minute Willand eventually regained the lead; a deft free kick over the crowded area to Jack Rice at the back post to head home.
This spurred Millbrook into a more offensive stance, suddenly they looked more threatening and Willand were on the back foot. Only a few minutes after taking the lead Willand found themselves back level; that man Shepherd causing confusion in the Willand box, a mix up in the home defence, 2-2.
It wasn’t until the 85 minute when Willand took the lead again, after a spell of pressure and a series of free kicks conceded by the visitors. The free kick was floated to the back post for Will Richards to calmly side-foot his volley in past the advancing keeper. 3-2; surely we can can see out the last 5 minutes!
It wasn’t to be. Right at the death a corner was conceded; it was whipped in at pace to the near post where it was met by Shepherd’s glancing head & into the net, past a stranded Burton. 3-3, a hat-trick for Shepherd, and the final whistle.
So, we go again at Millbrook on Tuesday at 7.45pm in the replay.
