Cherries are smashed for six in cup hammering at Norwich
CHERRIES crashed out of the Carabao Cup at the second-round stage after being on the end of a 6-0 hammering at Norwich.
Three first-half goals coming from Christos Tzolis, Kenny McLean and Lukas Rupp put Daniel Farke’s men in complete command of the cup tie at Carrow Road.
Josh Sargent then struck early in the second half for the Yellows before teeing up Tzolis for his second of the night. Sargent then slotted home a sixth with 16 minutes remaining.
Cherries made an array of changes from the side which started Saturday’s 2-2 Championship draw with Blackpool.
Defender Steve Cook came back in following a knee injury and took the captain’s armband, while there was also a full debut for academy graduate Brennan Camp at right-back.
Loan recruit Morgan Rogers, signed the previous day from Manchester City, was also named in Scott Parker’s side – along with keeper Orjan Nyland, who had a brief spell with the Canaries last season.
The hosts went into the contest looking for their first victory of the campaign, following defeats to Liverpool and Manchester City.
And it was Daniel Farke’s men who took the lead in simplistic fashion on 12 minutes.
A routine long ball forward from McLean found the run of Tzolis, whose deflected strike looped over a helpless Nyland to end up in the bottom corner.
Cherries’ first chance of the game came after 23 minutes. A cross from Emiliano Marcondes, playing as a false nine for the visitors, found the head of Camp.
The former Scotland youth international rose above his man but saw his effort comfortably held by home keeper Angus Gunn.
But the Canaries doubled their advantage on 26 minutes thanks to a special strike from McLean.
After the ball was worked from the left, the Scotland international rifled home with his left foot from outside the box past a helpless Nyland.
And the cup tie was virtually over as a contest as the Canaries fired in a third after 33 minutes.
Tzolis’s neat pass found the run of Rupp, who clinically despatched the ball into the bottom corner for 3-0.
And it got worse for Cherries just four minutes after the break.
After Ibsen Rossi gave away possession cheaply at the back, the hosts pounced and Sargent was on hand to slide in at the back post for his first Canaries goal.
Parker then brought on Chris Mepham and Ryan Glover in place of David Brooks and Marcondes, as Cherries changed shape to a back five. The occasion was Glover’s first senior appearance for the club.
Nyland then endured a moment of embarrassment for the visitors as he was at fault for Norwich’s fifth.
He gifted away possession to Sargent, who had the simplest of tasks to square for Tzolis to fire home his second of the night.
The errors kept coming for Cherries, Cook then lost possession in a dangerous area and allowed Tzolis the opportunity to put the ball on a plate for Sargent to smash in.
Christian Saydee, who had come off the bench for Cherries, almost pulled a goal back in injury time - but his header from Camp's cross fell just over the bar.
