9 = Barnstaple

Exeter to Barnstaple can be an interesting journey.

There is a railway line known as the "Tarka Line" and enthusiastic youngsters can collect pubs between the two towns by doing the "Tarka Trail". Get your card online then go from pub to pub collecting stamps but be warned that some pubs have a habit of losing their stamps. It is a great excuse for a pub crawl and there is time to sober up a bit on the train.

The "direct" route is a very winding twisty road that has a reputation for putting motorcyclists in hospital because of the blind bends as the road winds through the woods. It is a pleasant drive if you are in no hurry as the woodlands are reasonably attractive and you see the occasional posh property on the way. All the same pubs can be found on the way but don't stop as you are driving this one.

The quick and boring route uses the M5 and the North Devon Link Road. That road has ruined the North Devon environment as they are now connected to civilisation, and some of them have learned to communicate. I was so close to actually attending a match of theirs last season when a mini crisis diverted my attention. I hope to get there this season.

8th August = 2-1 Home win against Bradford Town

11th August = 4-0 Away win against Willand Rovers

15th August saw the start of the F.A.Cup and the very last teams drawn in match No.184. were

Barnstaple v. Willand Rovers

That midweek match may have had an influence but Barnstaple have today won 2-0.

This club have a winning start to the season and are therefore a must to visit soon.
