Arsenal cruise to victory to go second in WSL

Arsenal moved up to second in the Women's Super League after quickfire doubles in both halves sank Everton.

Beth Mead teed up Jordan Nobbs for a close-range finish, before Jill Roord crossed for Caitlin Foord to tap in.

Jen Beattie nodded in unmarked from Caitlin McCabe's corner, and Nobbs' crossfield pass then found Mead to curl in a finish from the edge of the box.

Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah's fine strike which hit the bar late on was Everton's best effort.

Arsenal, who remain four points behind leaders Manchester United following their 6-1 win over Bristol City, set a new WSL benchmark as their 10th successive win over Everton became the best winning streak against a single opponent, while the Blues have now lost all seven visits to the Gunners - also a league record.

Nobbs was recalled to the starting XI and WSL leading scorer Vivianne Miedema dropped to the bench as head coach Joe Montemurro rotated his squad, and the England international set the ball rolling with an early goal.

The Gunners kicked off with just one win in four WSL matches, but they created a string of first-half chances with keen pressing and quick passing, as Foord scooped a good chance over after netting her eighth of the season, and Beattie's header just cleared the bar.

Everton were buoyed by their midweek Continental League Cup win over Manchester United and responded well after half-time, but once again they felt the absence of their leading scorers Valerie Gauvin and Claire Emslie, while the clinical hosts killed the game with rapid sucker punches from Beattie and Mead.

The Toffees stay fifth, but have taken just two points from five matches after winning their opening four.
