Weymouth won their first game since October in dramatic fashion as they beat fellow National League side Maidenhead in the FA Trophy 3-2.

Brian Stock named a much changed side to the midweek defeat to Wrexham. Gerard Benfield, Alefe Santos, Jack Hoey and Cody Cooke replace Bycroft, Thomson, Leslie-Smith and Shields.

Hoey was quick to play the ball through to Cooke in the second minute, but the assistant referee flagged for offside.

The Terras were the better team in the early stages of the game and went 1-0 up in the 16th minute thanks to Cody Cooke. The Terras striker found himself through on goal following a ball from Jake McCarthy and calmly dribbled around Maidenhead shot stopper Josh Oluwayemi. The former St.Mirren man was composed and struck the ball into an open goal after deceiving the keeper.

The Terras came close to losing the lead but then doubled the score on the counter attack in the 32nd minute. Josh Coley switched the play over to Sam Barratt. The left winger fired a shot across goal but Benfield got to the ball well and parried the shot away. Santos played Cooke through on the break and the strikers shot was blocked by the goalkeeper. The ball fell back to Santos who won a penalty after being brought down by Manny Parry. Captain Josh McQuoid stepped up to take the penalty, slotting it past Oluwayemi’s right, despite the keeper going the right way.

Maidenhead got themselves back into the game in the 43rd minute. Danilo Orsi touched the ball down well inside the penalty area. The midfielder managed to turn Terras defenders to strike with his left foot past Benfield.

The comeback was completed in added time of the first half for the Magpies. Orsi bagged his brace within two minutes. The midfielder struck the ball from the right byline past Benfield.

Benfield was called into action straight after half time when Shaun Donnellan struck from 25 yards out. The Terras keeper was well positioned to palm away the effort.

Donnellan had another chance three minutes later. The Magpies number 4’s shot flashed just wide of Benfield’s right post.

Weymouth took the lead again in the 53rd minute. Ollie Harfields’s corner was steered into a crowded area. The ball deflected off of a plethora of players before Corey Jordan poked it over the line.

Cooke had a chance to get his second goal of the game in the 57th minute. Santos whipped a ball in from the left and Cooke, under pressure from Oluwayemi, failed to direct the head on target.

Jack Dickson came back from his injury to replace Zaid Al-Hussaini in the 77th minute.

Hoey played Cooke through in the 79th minute as their partnership looked to be getting stronger. The striker looked certain to score but Oluwayemi denied Cooke for a second time today in a one on one situation. The resulting clearance eventually led to a Maidenhead handball just outside the area. McCarthy took the direct free kick, which was fired narrowly over the crossbar.

The Magpies came close to an equaliser in the 83rd minute. Shaun Donnellan’s shot from 35 yards beat Benfield but struck the crossbar.

Maidenhead almost found their desired equaliser in the 93rd minute. Josh Smile’s deep cross was played towards substitute Alex Addai. Parry took the shot off of the winger and headed the ball wide of the goal.

The Terras played for time well to see out the game and progress for the next round of the FA Trophy for the first time since 2003.
