Willand Rovers FC vs Slimbridge FC
Match Report
Rovers eased to a 3-0 victory over Slimbridge at Silver Street on Saturday afternoon.
A brace and an assist from Ben Griffith was enough to give the hosts perhaps a more flattering win than the balance of play reflected.
On a very soft and heavy pitch it was difficult for either team to find any sort of rhythm or produce any fluency in their play.
The first half was a scrappy but even affair, with few short passages of cohesive football. Willand looked better on the ball, but the visitors always looked threatening on the break.
On 30 minutes, after some good work down the left wing the hosts finally took the lead: a perfectly floated cross finding the head of Griffith and the ball being clinically put in the net. 1-0.
The remainder of the half continued to be scrappy, but with the hosts just edging it.
The second half was again scrappy and very even although Willand spurned a glorious chance to take a two-goal advantage on 50 minutes.
It wasn’t until the 88th minute that Rovers wrapped the game up: the visitors’ defenders were tiring and were having to defend deeper and deeper as the hosts piled on some late pressure. From an initially defended corner the ball was crossed back into the visitor’s box to find Griffiths unmarked and able to head his second goal home past the despairing dive of Lewis Adams in the Slimbridge goal. 2-0.
As if to rub salt into the wound, just two minutes later a good break through the middle saw Griffiths one-on-one with the keeper, but with his first Rovers hat-trick beckoning he unselfishly squared the ball to Jack Rice to smash into an open net. 3-0 and full-time.
