Thursday and Friday

This week Arsenal Men play on Thursday night against Wolverhampton Wanderers and the Women play on Friday Night against Chelsea in the match that COULD decide the Womens Super League.

I love football enough to offer support to my teams at all levels but my club have a history at the top level for both men and women. In times of crisis I draw in and just follow the red of Arsenal.

This season both the men and the women have not been producing the performances that we expect from them and I do want to know whether that is because the Kroenke family are not supporting the managers or if the managers are not coaching the players well enough. I believe it is a little of both. The physical side of the game is being pushed but are the Arsenal squads getting the mental training that Arsene Wenger placed so much store by?

I watch with interest and hope that the January additions to the club can provide the missing parts that we so desperately need.

Lakeside Athletic 0 Shaldon Villa 10

From the Shaldon Villa facebook page:

Today's game for the Ladies finished with a 10-0 win!
They travelled to face a depleted Lakeside Ladies side and had to deal with some horrible weather conditions from kick off to final whistle.
The Ladies dominated the game, playing some great football and scoring some brilliant goals.
At the end of the first half, the Ladies found themselves 5-0 up at the break, thanks to a well taken hat-trick from striker Millie Cox, a goal for our debutant Megan McClure and finally a brilliant goal from Niamh Preston.
Half-time came and went with yet more rain and wind, and the Ladies tried their best to keep warm and focused to keep the pressure on and get more goals to show their dominance. And so they did!
Millie Cox continued with her fine form by adding another hat-trick to her goal tally! And Nashya Paz joined in on the action when she was subbed on by scoring 2 great goals!
A great team performance, and a fantastic opportunity taken by the Ladies to move up the league table. A huge well done as well to our debutant Megan, who slotted in well in to midfield and topped off her debut with a great headed goal. And welcome back as well to 2 returning players Steph Bishop and Rachel Rainbird, who return to the team after some time away from football, it was great to have you back!
MOTM went to Millie Cox for her impressive performance up top, scoring her 2 hat tricks and playing fantastically!
Finally, well done to Lakeside, who never gave up and defended brilliantly throughout the whole game.
Up the Villa!

Bideford 0 Royal Wootton Bassett Town 18

From the Royal Wootton Bassett website:

Ladies bounce back with big win over Bideford

Royal Wootton Bassett Town Ladies ended a four game winless stretch as they brushed aside South West Regional Women's Football League Premier Division basement dwellers Bideford 18-0.

Six different scorers found the net as Bassett racked up nine goals in both halves against a Robins side who they had already beaten 14-0 earlier this season.

Bassett's goals came in waves with Bideford, who to their credit again battled to the end, able to resist the pressure they were put under only for short periods.

It was 4-0 after just ten minutes, with Lani Dickinson scoring in the opening minute and again on nine minutes, with her second sandwiched between two goals for leading scorer Libby Davies.

After a brief period of respite, Bassett added three more, Davies taking her tally for the afternoon to four, with youngster Poppy Wannell making it 7-0 in the game's 24th minute.

Dickinson and Ellie O'Nions then completed the scoring for the opening period.

Just as in the first half, Bassett netted in the opening minute of the second period as Davies registered her fifth.

The score was not added to for the next quarter of an hour, but that interlude was interrupted by Aly Lyons kicking off a run off three goals in six minutes. Her first was followed by Dickinson's fourth, before Lyons notched her second and her team's thirteenth.

A final flurry came in the game's final eleven minutes as Bassett added a handful more.

Hannah Gulliver scored for the first time since September, Davies netted her sixth, Dickinson her fifth, while Wannell registered twice more to seal her hat trick.

While a welcome boost to their goal difference, Bassett know that much tougher tests await in their final four games of the campaign. That final stretch includes two fixtures against Torquay United, beginning with the away contest against the Gulls next week.

Cheltenham Town 2 Exeter City 1

LEAGUE PLATE: CTLFC 2-1 EXETER CITY WOMEN

7TH FEBRUARY 2022

Report by Jamie Cameron

Another brace from Lacy-Jai Liggett continued Cheltenham Town Ladies’ record-breaking run in the National League Plate, as they progressed to the semi-finals.

Liggett (pictured) had scored twice in the Robins’ latest league win against Maidenhead last weekend, and helped overturn a 1-0 deficit against Exeter City to win 2-1 and reach the last four.

The visitors had taken an early lead through Steph Beck, but Liggett weaved through three defenders and finished to level on 40 minutes.

Another surging run from Liggett and a low strike under Abbi Bond meant Cheltenham made it seven games unbeaten in all competitions.

Manager Tom Davies made three changes to his side as Sammy Hallsworth, Charlotte Criddle and Georgie-Marie Barbour-Gresham came in.

It was a slightly depleted squad; only three substitutes were named with Emily Owen and Holly Reed both cup tied.

The first action of the game saw a goal for the visitors as the ball bounced around the edge of the Cheltenham area, and Beck calmly slotted in after it fell to her.

Liggett hit the bar from a header as the Robins looked for an immediate response, but Exeter threatened themselves through Sarah Stacey, who shot over the bar when through on goal.

As the half went on, Liggett started causing more problems for the visitors, putting in dangerous crosses from the right and forcing a save from Bond.

Despite Exeter hitting the woodwork on 36 minutes, Cheltenham went in level after Liggett did brilliantly to find space when surrounded by defenders and finished ruthlessly into the roof of the net.

After a fairly quiet start to the second half, Liggett got her fifth goal in three games with a powerful run into the area and a low shot from a tight angle that Bond couldn’t keep out.

The Robins had a series of chances around the 70-minute mark as they looked to put the game to bed, with Billie Haynes having a couple of efforts and the Exeter defence having to be alert to deal with a succession of corners.

Cheltenham couldn’t find the third goal so opted to sit back and see the game out, which they did so as efficiently as ever.

The three sides standing between Town and silverware are Nottingham Forest, AFC Wimbledon and Sporting Khalsa.

After the game, Davies said: “There was some quality play from both sides but both sides knew it was going to be a tough game coming into it and we were fortunate to come out on the positive side of the result.

“We weren’t managing games as well as we can at the start of the season, so today was really pleasing. We’ve managed the game really well and taken the sting out of the game.

“Lacy’s been in really good form and she’s striking the ball really well. As a forward, whenever you’re confident, the chances will always come. The run she’s on is fully deserved and she’s a big part of what we’re doing this season.

“It’s a historic moment for us to reach the semi-finals so we’ll just go and enjoy that game when it comes and hopefully get a positive result.”

Cheltenham return to league action against Southampton Women next Sunday, and ahead of that one, Davies said: “We’re expecting a really tough game. We’ve played them twice this season and we want to put the league defeat against them right.

“They’re a fantastic side and they’re strong both physically and technically, so it’s going to be really tough.”

Cheltenham: Watson, Colley, Butler, Barbour-Gresham, Hallsworth, Jones, Criddle, Liggett, Haynes, Rogers (Hayward 75), Wathan.
Subs not used: Legall, Walecki.

Bridgwater United 0-0 Gillingham

IN windy and wet conditions on Sunday, Bridgwater United dominated possession and chances for 90 minutes of football only to draw 0-0 with Gillingham in the FA Women's National League.

The match at Fairfax Park featured a number of strong defensive performances for Bridgwater but the side lacked that critical edge going forward.

In the opening exchanges Gillingham did create a clear chance to which Bethany-May Howard was resolute to, she showed once again in this game why she is highly rated between the sticks.

After that chance however Bridgwater were on top and driving forward quite regularly.

Ffion Lewellyn and Amy Goddard dictated play from the back and Charlotte Buxton and Holly Chandler were making appropriate runs forward from full back positions.

The first shot on target for Bridgwater came from a Laura Holden effort at range; the Gillingham keeper was forced into a decent save.

Captain Leah Burridge followed suit shortly after however her strike went narrowly over the bar.

There were few more efforts on target in the first half but that wasn't because Bridgwater couldn't get forward.

In fact the majority of the first half was played in the opposition side of the pitch, United were winning corners and close-range free kicks but just could not find the back of the net.

Going into the second period Bridgwater continued on in the same way, driving forward looking for a goal.

Gillingham created one or two more chances but it has to be said, the rock solid defence from Bridgwater did not look like they would be beaten.

Laura Holden was replaced by Sydney Hinchcliffe and shortly after Jasmine Turner came on for Meesha Dudley-Jones, the pair looking to provide some fresh legs going forward.

The Gillingham keeper was under pressure but never truly tested until the 80th minute.

Emily Wilson-White was played in behind by Burridge, she showed her pace and skill to get the ball on to her left foot before shooting, the deflected shot was then parried by the goalkeeper.

There was a few more efforts from Bridgwater but the deadlock remained unbroken and the final score was as it started, 0-0.

Up next, Bridgwater are at home once more on February 13, against Southampton in the league, kick off is 2pm.

📝 REPORT: BRISTOL CITY 4-0 CRYSTAL PALACE

City Women bounced back with an emphatic 4-0 victory over Crystal Palace at the Robins High Performance Centre.

Two goals from Abi Harrison, a direct corner from Amiee Palmer followed a 45-second opener from Chloe Bull to give the Robins all three points.

🧐 BACKGROUND

City went into the game looking to bounce back from three successive defeats.

Manager Lauren Smith made two changes from the side that lost to Southampton, Naomi Layzell and Chloe Bull replacing Lea Cataldo and Izzy Cook.

✍️ WHAT HAPPENED?

City got on the scoresheet inside the first minute when Davies played the ball to Bull and she finds the back of the net from the edge of the box.

As a mark of intent from the Robins, the goal had the desired effect and with the faithful crowd behind them and their tails up, the second duly followed in the 15th minute.

Mel Johnson played a great ball into the box and Harrison slid in to power the ball past Emily Orman in the Palace goal.

City almost grabbed a third when Harrison’s shot is parried by Orman but Johnson puts the effort from the rebound just wide of the post.

The Robins were on top for the rest of the half with Fran Bentley largely untroubled in the City goal.

⏱ HALF-TIME

The second half saw City with the win at their backs and it paid off in the 54th minute when Palmer swung in a trademark corner which beat everyone including Orman.

The Palace keeper certainly kept the score down with Harrison and Morgan both having efforts saved.

However, Harrison was not to be denied and the striker made no mistake in the 83rd minute when Davies played her in and the Scot fired in on her right foot.

City closed the game out, much to the delight of the 367-strong vocal crowd.

Match report: Arsenal 1-1 Manchester United

WHAT HAPPENED

Stina Blackstenius scored her first goal for the club on Saturday as we salvaged a late 1-1 draw with Manchester United.

We were trailing 1-0 and down to 10 players heading into the final 15 minutes, but Jonas Eidevall’s side never lost belief and got their reward with an outstanding counter-attacking move.

After making a positive start, it was the visitors who opened the scoring and in typical fashion too. Manchester United have score more goals from corners than any other side in the Women’s Super League this season, and this time it was Alessia Russo waiting at the far post to head beyond Manuela Zinsberger.

Vivianne Miedema came accordingly close to an equaliser just moments later after going it alone and carrying the ball for more than 30 yards, but her powerful effort bounced back off the bar and onto the goalline.

Shortly after Tobin Heath saw her curling effort sail over the bar after cutting inside from the left wing.

Eidevall opted for a change during the half-time interval with Tobin Heath being replaced by Caitlin Foord, and the latter came close to making an instant impact off the bench, only to see her first-time effort from close range saved by Mary Earps.

Our hopes of securing a result took another hit when Katie McCabe was dismissed for picking up her second yellow card of the afternoon - but with one last roll of the dice, Miedema picked up the ball deep inside her own half and set Blackstenius through on goal with an inch-perfect pass.

Our No 25 pulled away from her marker with a sharp turn of pace and with Earps rushing off her line to close the angle, Blackstenius showed great composure to find the back of the net and secure a vital point in the race for the WSL title.
