My Mother

Lack of blog entries is down to big changes happening in my mother's life which have impacted my own. We visited her a few months ago only to find that she was not feeding herself properly as there were many opened but uncooked ready meals in the kitchen. We were notified by a family friend that she was vague and not making sense so armed with these two pieces of information we brought her home and looked after her for the next few months.

There were issues with her amnesia and toileting that made this period very challenging. We tried to keep her mind occupied by taking her to various places but she was now doubly incontinent and this became too much so we started looking for a care home that could take over and give her a good standard of life.

We found one that would take her but the room was only available immediately so we started paying for it and took her in after a couple of weeks. It is expensive but we spoke to a family friend who used to work there and we were told that it is one of the best. I am not surprised given the cost. She now seems to be settled there but the professionals who examined her have now declared her to be without capacity.

Having got my mother settled the work really started. We have appointed accountants to deal with the constant stream of post about various investments. That gives us some breathing time to look at what paperwork remained in her house. We still have not examined it all. Hopefully I can get through it before the new football season starts.

We need to sell her property now that she has a care home to accommodate her. First, though, we have to empty her property of a lifetime of "things" as she was clearly a hoarder. We have grabbed many slides and photographs which we will go through at our own leisure. We have also invited various people to come and look at things that they might find useful. Progress is slow.

With all this going on I have given myself a break from the blog and just relaxed whenever a match comes on the television. It has been liberating.

See you again when I find the time.
